The Deadly Syndrome

The Deadly Syndrome

The Deadly Syndrome was an indie rock quartet formed in 2006 in Los Angeles, bringing together members Will Etling, Jesse Hoy, Michael Hughes, and Christopher “Crash” Richard. Emerging from the Silver Lake music scene, the band quickly gained attention for their expansive, emotionally driven sound and signed to Dim Mak Records, releasing their debut album The Ortolan in 2007. Their music blended indie rock with art-pop elements, often featuring layered instrumentation like accordion and synths alongside introspective, sometimes darkly humorous lyrics. The Ortolan helped establish their reputation, followed by later releases including Nolens Volens (2010) and All in Time (2012).

Beyond their recordings, The Deadly Syndrome developed a devoted following through energetic live performances and collaborations within the broader indie community, including connections to Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. Their ethos often reflected a spirit of collaboration and grassroots creativity sometimes associated with ideas like “Community Music,” as they built their identity within a tight-knit local scene and emphasized collective artistic expression. After several years of touring and releasing music, the band officially disbanded in 2013, leaving behind a small but influential catalog that continues to resonate with indie music fans.
